Song Notes on “The
Universe Is Waiting”
When my godson, Max, was born a couple of years ago, I wanted to write a
song as a gift for him (I had already written one for his sister,
Madeline). I was trying to think of something that would inspire the hope
that a new child brings, with his whole life in front of him…something
strong, masculine, and thoughtful.
I was on the road in Utah in a hotel room facing the Wasatch mountains
when the idea ‘hit.’ The Psalm reading for that day was from Psalm 121:
I will lift up my eyes to the hills…where
does my help come from?
The line, “you will rise like a mountain” formed in my mind and the
process began. I wrote most of the song that day with some final polishing
over the next day or two. Breaking the traditional rule of songwriting,
which says to put the title in the chorus, I put it in the second line of
the first verse. It’s the only place it appears.
